I’ve recently found that I need a second phone, so I went out looking for one. I thought that, surely, with so many phone manufacturers jostling for space in the market, there would be something like, i dunno, choices? Instead, I found brick after brick after black brick. And the only thing that stood out – that foldable Samsung – well, it was nice that it folded but so what? No hate for Samsung, but seriously, having a phone that folds doesn’t add a whole lot once you get past the novelty of it.
This is the reason all the joy has been sucked out of buying phones. There was a time when the prospect of getting a new phone didn’t feel like such a bore. You could be excited about what was out there. There were phones that had slide out keyboards, phones shaped like avocados, and yes, phones that folded. Unfortunately, with the advent of touch screen smartphones, all of that diversity simply vanished, and now it’s like they’re all clones of each other.
Apart from technical arcana and a few performance details, what differentiates a Xiaomi from a Vivo from a Samsung from an iPhone? Again, no hate – just a lot of frustration. Frustration that came to a head yesterday when I was looking for that aforementioned second phone I needed.
In the end, I wound up getting the cheapest phone I could find – although you wouldn’t be able to tell. Like I said. They all look alike.
