Don’t look now but Iceland’s Prime Minister – Johanna Sigurdardottir – just up and married her longtime partner. Apparently, around those parts, they’re a heck of a lot more tolerant of gays and lesbians. According to the report:
“There is some kind of passion for social justice here,” respected cross-dressing Swedish lawmaker Fredrick Federley said.
But, I think the Brit gay-rights activist from OutRage hit closer to home when he said
“In Europe the reaction is completely different (to gay marriages) – people just don’t care.”
Which makes me wonder. In other places, the fight for equality of treatment necessarily includes state acceptance of gay marriages. This to me seems a reasonable stand. Obviously, if gay marriages are not accepted by the state, the equitable treatment being received will always be imperfect. Freedom and equality, after all, are all-or-none propositions.
And yet, here in the Philippines, it seems that Ang Ladlad does NOT espouse gay marriages. I wonder why that is.
