Today’s the last day for filing statements of campaign contributions and expenditures. Not that that means a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.
To be perfectly candid, this is one of those areas – I’m thinking of writing a series entitled Dear Elections … the 10 Things I hate About You – that really need revisiting by the newly-elected worthies in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Without any changes in the law on the reporting of expenditures, it’ll continue to make no sense to adhere to the spending limits, it’ll continue to make no sense to spare any real effort to be thorough with the reports, and we – the voters – will continue voting for people, not because of their intrinsic fitness for the job, but because we’ve been told to do so by their adverts.
