Aisha

Today I found out my niece – who lives in Karachi, btw – is a budding poet and she’s been jotting these lines down in what looks like a promotional desktop planner/calendar. Words will out – for real. I’m reminded of JK Rowling scribbling bits of Harry Potter on napkins.

That Aisha writes actually shouldn’t come as a surprise to me. Her mom – my sister – graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, with a degree in Comparative Literature. AND, when she was in High School (high school, for crying out loud!) she actually wrote a complete novel – an achievement that still eludes me, btw!

Now it’s her daughter’s turn. Aisha hasn’t written a novel yet – sure – but it’s early. She could, I suppose, if she put her mind to it; or she could have enough for a book of poems. Either way, that would be awesome.

And it looks like she’s an artist as well. I mean, look at this. With just eleven simple lines, she was able to convey a wealth of information – and a depth of feeling – in a way that few people can. I know I certainly can’t.

My niece, Aisha is turning 18 next month and she’s just finishing up her pre-med before going to uni next year. Medicine! Can you imagine. We’re gonna have a doctor in the family. A doctor who writes creatively and draws. AND – there is no overemphasizing this either – a doctor with decent penmanship. LOL

Well done, knee! Well done indeed!
