I wish someone would explain to me why the walls of various underpasses are being covered in white, red, yellow, and blue tiles. I’ve also seen those tiles on the pillars of the LRT1.
Seriously. Why?
I don’t know if it’s supposed to be a deterrent to vandalism, but on almost every other score I can think of, this tiling project seems likely not to be the smartest decision.
First of all, most of the tiles are white. Once those things get coated in oil and grime, they’ll be a bitch to clean. So, I don’t see them keeping the walls clean.
Second, even assuming that tiles are easier to clean off – warm, sudsy water and a lot of elbow grease will probably result in a more effective clean up than if you were cleaning painted concrete – what about the grouting? Even if you wipe off the tiles, you’re still gonna miss the gunk in the grouting. The tiled walls may seem pristine white when they’re newly installed, but even now, some of the tiles laid earlier are lined in sooty black. Does that make the underpass look cleaner? IMO, it just makes the whole place look like a dirty kitchen.
Or, third, not a dirty kitchen but a dirty toilet. Is that it, then? Is this tiling of our underpasses a sign of surrender to the practice of pissing whenever and wherever the urge hits? If it is, then maybe we should all just laugh at it.
I don’t know. Like I said, I’m not able to make heads or tails of this.
Do you think this is a good idea? Or is it just a bad case of toilet humor?
