Between a rock and a hard place

For almost a week now, PLDT Home DSL – or whatever the duck it’s called – has not been delivering services the way we contracted it would. The contract is simple enough. Once a month, I fork over enough money to keep me fed for about a week, in exchange for the ability to connect to the internet at any time I choose and for practically however long, during that month, I want to stay connected. Instead, I’m unable to connect to the internet, but i’m pretty damned sure that I will be charged as though I’d been on-line 24/7 for the entire billing period.

And like a good, scared-shitless, consumer, I will cough up the money very close to the due date (my ability to rebel usually extends all the way up to three days before the bill falls due) and pray to god that my internet connection gets better.

Thanks PLDT.

However, I would be a failure as a person if I actually went ahead and put all of my internet eggs in one monolithic basket, yes? So I have Globe.

Which sent me this:

Hi! Did you know that your mobile internet usage for the month has already reached 1.5GB? Don’t worry, you can still browse at normal speed. This is just a friendly reminder that your data plan is covered by our Fair Use Policy. Read about it at www.globe.com.ph/surf/fup. Avoid reduced speed by tracking your mobile internet usage. Dial *143# and choose MyAccount or text SUPERSURF CHECK to 8888, free.

Call me paranoid but there is nothing friendly about that reminder. That’s the email equivalent of a thug standing outside your store, giving you the evil eye and mumbling something about how you better not be late with the “rent” or “Tsip” won’t be happy and when “Tsip” isn’t happy weird things start happening like stick-ups and muggings.

So I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. My primary internet connection is practically non-existent and my back-up just waiting to shaft me. And never mind that I – as a paying customer – NEVER gave my consent to this Fair Use Policy nonsense

Wait, what?

It was in the fine print?

@($&ret-w0es&^2??!!s$$%$&^)!
